The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the epidemic was a public health emergency that gained international attention on 30 January 2020 and was recognized as an epidemic on 11 March 2020. By April 2, 2020, more than 981,000 COVID-19s were reported in more than 180 countries and 200 regions, causing more than 50,200 deaths. More than 204,000 people have recovered.

The infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.
